at Work Conference,
Easton, Bristol, February 2000
ACTION
POINTS
Action
Points suggested in the Conference to be presented to the South TUC Race
Committee and the TUC Stephen Lawrence Task Group.
·
Trade
unions have excellent policies on race equality and the challenge is now
to put these into action and imbed good practice into all aspects of
union work.
·
Trade
unions need to be more visible and accessible. They need to generate
more publicity for their success stories.
·
The
ideas and work of the TUC Stephen Lawrence Task Group needs to be widely
circulated and backed up by action at regional and local level.
·
Materials
should be produced in relevant languages.
·
Unions
should target black members to offer them attractive training
opportunities to develop their organising and leadership skills.
·
Unions
should strengthen their partnership with community and voluntary
organisations. They should work closely with Racial Equality Councils
and other black and ethnic minority organisations.
·
The
South West TUC and unions need to develop structures that attract young
people and encourage them to participate.
·
Union
officers dealing with discrimination should be trained to meet high
standards and keep up to date with relevant legislation and case law.
All union representatives need to be properly trained in equalities.
·
The
South West TUC should monitor union progress towards improving their
standards in combating discrimination.
