Build a Stronger Union where you work with the TUC ACTIVIST ACADEMY

What's in it for reps and activists? | How to get on a course? | Activist Academy Contacts | CORE's

The Activist Academy is a new programme from the TUC and unionlearn aimed at union reps and activists.  By linking training to activity and action, the Activist Academy will help reps develop their skills and provide additional support and resources so that they can build a stronger union in their branch or workplace.

Activist Academy courses will be delivered via a national network of Centres of Organising and Recruitment Excellence (COREs) based at specially selected Trade Union Education centres.

All make the link between training and activity and action, all Activist Academy course participants will work on a workplace or branch based campaign – with outcomes based on recruiting new members, new activists and raising the profile of the union – that they will either bring to the training or develop during the course.
All Activist Academy courses are accredited and usually last 6-days, delivered over three 2-day blocks.

WHAT’S IN IT FOR REPS AND ACTIVISTS?

Reps are important but they are also volunteers so we are using the Activist Academy to give reps and activists new and additional skills, together with extra support to make the union stronger in their workplace or branch.  To do this, all reps attending Activist Academy courses will get the following;

  • Specialist training in organising and campaigning - delivered by experienced and specially briefed Trade Union tutors. On the course you will cover key organising and campaigning skills such as mapping, identifying collective issues, recruiting new members, campaigning planning and also how to improve communication between the union and members and potential members.  All training is accredited and when you complete the course you will get the Activist Academy certificate in Organising and Campaigning.
  • Support from the TUC Activist Academy and your union – linked to the campaign that you either bring to the Activist Academy or develop during the training.  All Activist Academy course participants will have access to support, advice and guidance from the TUC and/or their union.  Activist Academy mentoring and support will help you to develop your campaign using the skills that you develop during the course.  You will also have access to special TUC resources via the unionreps website and become part of the TUC Activist Academy Reps and Activists network.
  • A route into the Organising Academy – for those interested in becoming full time union organisers via the TUCs prestigious Organising Academy Trainee Organiser programme.  If you complete the Activist Academy course you will get an automatic interview for the Organising Academy candidate pool, meaning that you won’t have to attend one of the Organising Academy Summer Development Centres.

HOW TO GET ON A COURSE

Details of Activist Academy courses dates are advertised on the TUC website and can be obtained from COREs directly – contact details below. You can also get course dates and additional information by emailing activistacademy@tuc.org.uk.

To get on a course you will have to commit to attending all six days of the training and to working on your campaign or project whilst you’re back in the workplace.  You can bring an on-going campaign (local, regional or national) with you to the training or develop one whilst you’re there.

Finally, whilst the TUC provides support and additional resources to Activist Academy participants, both your learning and the opportunity to put your skills into practice will be enhanced if you can get someone to act as your mentor.  This can either be another (possibly more experienced rep from your branch), a union officer or an organiser.  If the person you approach asks for more information, ask them to contact either the college that is running the Activist Academy course that you are applying for, or the TUC.

Guidance on submitting applications can be obtained from Activist Academy Centre of Excellence to which you are applying.
