Advance notice: new survey shows cost of bullying at work

Millions of working days are lost every year because of workplace bullying according to a new survey, the most comprehensive of its kind, to be released on 14 February.

The survey of 5,500 UK employees across the public, private and voluntary sectors, conducted by the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology (UMIST) and supported by the TUC and CBI, reveals the extent of workplace bullying in Britain today and looks at the impact on staff morale and the economy.

Professor Cary Cooper and Helge Hoel from UMIST will present the findings at a press conference on Monday 14 February at Congress House, Great Russell Street, London, WC1B 3LS. TUC General Secretary, John Monks and John Cridland, Director of Human Resources Policy at the CBI will speak at the conference which starts at 11am.

The survey results represent the key findings of a three year study on the impact of bullying at work. UMIST will publish a full academic report in November.

The survey is funded by the British Occupational Health Research Foundation (BOHRF). Study Advisory Board members include representatives from the public, private and voluntary sectors: The Health and Safety Executive, Federation of Small Business, The Institute of Personnel and Development, The Institute of Management, The Employers' Organisation (local government), Co-op, NatWest, Littlewoods, Rover Group, Shell UK, The Suzy Lamplugh Trust, The Andrea Adams Trust, Manufacturing Science Finance Union, and the Police Federation.
