Commenting on new figures published today (Friday) by the ONS - which show that redundancy rates are 62% higher for disabled workers - TUC General Secretary Frances O'Grady said:

“This pandemic has shone a light on huge inequalities in our labour market.

“Disabled workers have been amongst the hardest hit - both in terms of their jobs and pay.

“As we saw with the last financial crisis, unemployment has a long-term and scarring effect on disabled people.

“They are all too often the last to be hired and the first out of the door."

The TUC is calling on ministers to:

  • look at the impact of their policies on disabled workers to make sure they are not increasing the impact of the pandemic on disabled workers.

  • ensure the long overdue National Strategy for Disabled People properly addresses these deepening inequalities and sets out clear and urgent actions to tackle the impact of the pandemic.
