Mesothelioma Bill welcomed but still room for improvement, says Northern TUC Asbestos Group
The introduction of new compensation arrangements for mesothelioma victims was announced in the Queen's Speech earlier this month. The current proposal will mean a payment of between £100,000 and £200,000 being made to 300 people every year  who previously would have received nothing.

Middlesbrough to march for an alternative to austerity
Tees Valley Public Services Alliance have organised a Middlesbrough March for the Alternative' this Saturday (27 April) to draw attention to the effects of austerity in Teesside and the North East, the region hardest hit by government cuts. Marchers will assemble at 11.00am at Albert Memorial Park, then walk down Linthorpe Road and the city centre.

Northern TUC Regional Secretary appointed as national Head of Organising and Services Department
Northern TUC Regional Secretary, Kevin Rowan has been appointed as the new TUC Head of Organising and Services Department, based in London. He will be beginning his new role effective of Monday 22nd April.

Workers in the region up to £4264 worse off per year since Coalition came to power
<p>Analysis from the Northern TUC 10 Point Plan for A Northern Future that Works manifesto (being launched this weekend 13 and 14 April at Regional Conference) also shows that since the Coalition government was formed the average full-time wage has fallen significantly in real terms across the northern region. In the North east, full-time workers are now on average &pound;1196 worse off per year in real terms than if wages had risen in line with inflation (RPI) under the Coalition. In Cumbria, people are &pound;1872 worse off.</p>

Number of Job seekers increases by up to a third across the region under Coalition
<p>Analysis from the Northern TUC 10 Point Plan for A Northern Future that Works manifesto (being launched this weekend 13 and 14 April at Regional Conference) highlights, amongst other things, the stark reality of employment in the north east and Cumbria. Despite claims of job creation and figures illustrating that employment has increased, under the Coalition government every Local Authority area in the region now has a minimum of 10% more jobseekers than before.</p>

Colombia and Palestine come to the North East to make it a truly International Women's Day
This Friday March 8th is International Women's Day throughout the world. To mark the event in our region, the Northern TUC's Women's Group, UNISON Northern and War on Want are holding a joint event Women, Human Rights and the Globalisation of Resistance  Inspiration and culture in times of crisis' at the Assembly Rooms, Fenkle Street, Newcastle between 4.30pm to 7.30pm.

North East workers do £14 million of unpaid overtime every week
The North East's workers do unpaid overtime per week worth over £14 million per week and almost £748 million per year according to new findings. Analysis published by the TUC today (Friday), on the ninth annual Work Your Proper Hours Day shows that 1799,030 workers (17.5%) in the North East are regularly working unpaid hours overtime with the average amount being 6 hours per week.

North East Sharkstoppers launch a campaign with teeth to combat legal loan sharks
This Sunday (24th February) will see the regional Sharkstoppers campaign begin in earnest with a high profile event at Grey's Monument in Newcastle. Concerned local people from a range of organisations including the TUC, trade unions, the Citizens Advice Bureau, Credit Unions, advice agencies and Housing Associations will be gathering at the Monument at 11.30am-1.30pm to highlight the impact of high cost money lenders and their practices.

One Billion Rising in Northern region
On Thursday 14th February three of the major cities in the north east (Newcastle, Sunderland and Durham) are set to become part of the global One Billion Rising movement. Events will be happening throughout the day across the whole of the region, country, and indeed the world, to raise awareness of the prevalence of violence against women and demand an end to it.

Northern TUC Asbestos Group has won over £310,000 for asbestos victims and their families
Since September 2012, Advice Workers from the Northern TUC Asbestos Support and Campaign Group have secured nearly one third of a million pounds (£311,643.00) in one-off compensation payments for asbestos victims in the northern region. In addition to this, they have also facilitated payment of welfare benefits in excess of £105,000 per month for victims and their families.
