Solidarity from Greek media workers

Dimitris Trimis JUADN President sent the following message in support of the march on Saturday in the UK:

'Brothers and Sisters in the UK and Ireland,

Journalists and Media workers in Greece went on strike on 17 October protesting austerity measures imposed by the Troika - the IMF, European Commission and ECB - that have led to the collapse of working conditions affecting the majority of the workforce in the country, currently facing a 24% unemployment rate.

One in every four Greeks is out of work - in the media sector unemployment is even higher - combined with the end of collective work agreements, dramatic cuts and loss of jobs in Greek media and the 'hair cut' imposed on Media Funds providing pensions and health coverage. This means nothing but hardship for thousands of journalists and their families.

Greek media workers stand united in our demand for work, decent work agreements, social security for all and credible democratic news information based on society's real needs.

In solidarity we reach for you marching and protesting in the UK and Ireland against austerity!

Best fraternal greetings,

Dimitris Trimis

President Journalists Union of the Athens Daily Newspapers'
