Iraq's union federation, the GFIW, have been facing a crackdown from their government, with unions derecognised and a heavily partisan committee appointed to take control of union elections and assets.
Union colleagues in Iraq are reporting officials coming to take over their offices, backed up by the police and military.
Brendan Barber has written a letter of protest to the Iraqi government, threatening to veto Iraq's delegation to the upcoming ILO talks, and trade unionists world wide have expressed their concerns directly to the Iraqi government through grassroots international network LabourStart's online campaign action (now closed).
