Burma

The situation in Burma remains a major concern for many British Trade Unionists due to the repressive nature of the military regime. The TUC is particularly concerned about the continued use of forced labour and the repression of trade unions. We maintain close contact with the exiled Federation of Trade Unions of Burma (FTUB). Working with affiliated unions and the Burma Campaign UK, we seek to persuade the British government to take stronger action including a ban on UK investment in Burma.

TUC Aid Appeal 2010-11

TUC Aid is appealing for funds to help trade unionists in Burma, as well as Palestine and Zimbabwe. From rampant forced labour and the recruitment of child soldiers to waging war on its own people, Burma is one of the worst countries in the world to be a worker. The Federation of Trade Unions – Burma (FTUB) is banned, dubbed a terrorist organisation by the regime and forced to operate underground. Your support can help the FTUB educate and train its organisers and tell Burmese workers' stories to the outside world. With sham elections in November threatening to entrench military rule, now is a critical time to help the Burmese unions in their struggle for democracy and workers' rights.
