TUC/DFID Strategic Grant Agreement update

The three year Strategic Grant Agreement signed by the TUC with DFID to raise awareness and build support for international development within the UK trade union movement, with a view of enhancing our capacity take action is moving into its final phases.

The Mini Learning Fund enables trade unions to develop work on international development education work. The second reporting phase of the ten funded projects have now been completed and progress and financial reports are due to be sent to DFID.

Due to the appalling incidents in London in early July, the third International Development Education Seminar, which aimed to share best practice and problem solving amongst trade unions in this area was postponed. It is now set to take place on Wednesday 5 October.

The application process for the second year of the SGA Mini Grants has now closed. The Mini Grants enable TUC regions and affiliates to bid for small amounts of money to host a developing country trade unionist and or develop a small project on international development awareness. This was a competitive bidding process and the details of those who have been successful are still being finalised.

Maung Maung, the exiled General Secretary of the Federation of Trade Unions of Burma was hosted by the SGA in mid July. He met with a number of unions who are interested in supporting the FTUB's efforts in organising the suppressed workers inside Burma. These include the NUJ, Community, GMB and Unison. He also met with the aid section of Amicus and the Head of Global Operations at Lloyd's, who underwrite the Burmese national shipping industry. Other meetings were held with the Ian Pearson, FCO Minister; the All Party Group on Burma; the Burma Campaign; and other NGOs. The end of the visit was spent at Tolpuddle where he was able to raise awareness of the situation of workers in Burma.
