TUC Aid helps improve children's lives in Pakistan

Fetching waterChildren accompanied by adults living in the villages in Balakot Tehsil, Pakistan, had to trek long distances to fetch water following the destruction caused to the water supplies by the earthquake in October 2005. Many of them had not seen a classroom for years, as a large number of schools in the area were also destroyed in the earthquake. Things have begun to change for some of them.

With a grant of £10,000 from TUC Aid, ISCOS (Italian acronym), Trade Unions Institute for Development Cooperation, in partnership with the Pakistan Workers' Federation (PWF) has been able to renovate Shaother School in the Mohallah Shahoter Village, Balakot Tehsil, Manshera District, Pakistan. The school caters for some 200 children who were previously having their lessons in temporary shelters. The renovation of the school includes the construction of some new classrooms, toilets, improvements to the playground etc.

In addition, financial support from TUC Aid has also made it possible for ISCOS to improve the delivery of potable water to the villages in the affected area. The residents now have access to potable water supplied to them by a specially equipped tractor purchased under the Project.
