Tell River Island to fix their deathtrap factories in Bangladesh

Issue date

Relatives search for missing workers after the Rana Plaza disaster

Over 1,200 people died when the unsafe Rana Plaza garment factory building collapsed in Bangladesh less than 6 months ago. Hundreds of children have lost parents and over a thousand people still need medical assistance for their injuries

It was the biggest loss of life ever in a workplace disaster, but factory fires and accidents are all too common in Bangladesh. The huge blaze at Tazreen Fashions last year has been followed by more lethal fires in the last few months.

But here's the thing: These kinds of tragedies could be prevented. The Bangladesh Fire & Safety Accord requires companies to make fundamental changes to workplace safety. Nearly all the big UK clothing brands have signed it, but not yet all.

We're supporting our friends at new campaign group SumOfUs, as they try to convince one of these companies, River Island, to sign.

While most retailers have been stepping up and doing the right thing, River Island has been keeping a low profile. The company is probably hoping that if it keeps its head down, it can carry on business as usual.

We need to show River Island that their customers want them to protect workers from dangerous death traps and sign the Bangladesh Safety Accord. It will only add pennies on to the cost of producing a T-shirt. But yet, it appears that River Island is more concerned with its profit margins than with stopping people from dying in factory death traps.

Please join SumOfUs' petition, and add your name to this public call on River Island to sign the Bangladesh Safety Accord.
