Rhyme, Rhythm and Reason
Wednesday 7 October 2009
Wellington Chibebe, General Secretary of the Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU), will address the TUC World Day for Decent Work night out on Wednesday 7 October.
Wellington, who has led the ZCTU since his predecessor - and now Prime Minister of Zimbabwe Morgan Tsvangarai - left the trade union movement for politics, has been arrested regularly for his trade union work, and was made an Amnesty International prisoner of conscience when he was jailed and beaten in 2007.
He joins TUC Deputy General Secretary Frances O'Grady; BBC Newsnight journalist Paul Mason; Lynsey Hanley, journalist and author of Estates: An Intimate History; and geographer Doreen Massey. There will also be a special presentation on life underground - the work of the cleaners who keep the tube safe, and were being treated appallingly until RMT took up their case.
Providing entertainment will be the legendary Linton Kwesi Johnson, making a rare London appearance; fellow dub poet, Jean 'Binta' Breeze; performance poet and author Laura Dockrill and Congolese refugee band, The Zong Zing All Stars.
The evening has been put together by Philosophy Football, and it is expected to sell out so book tickets (or a whole table if you've got nine friends and colleagues!) from www.philosophyfootball.com/view_item.php?pid=531
