Letter from TUC General Secretary

July 2013

TUC General Secretary Frances O'Grady has sent the following letter in solidarity with the Fiji Sugar Workers' and General Union (FSWGU) who have successfully balloted for strike action in their pay dispute.

For more information see the FSWGU statement here and the ITUC's announcement here. And watch out for updates on LabourStart.

Dear Felix

Fiji Sugar Corporation industrial dispute

On behalf of the British trade union movement and our 6 million members, I send you our solidarity with your campaign for a decent wage rise and associated benefits for the workers in the mills of the Fiji Sugar Corporation.

As you know, the sugar they mill is shipped to the UK where British trade unionists refine it, and our longstanding links with our sisters and brothers in the Fijian trade union movement is based on that global trade.

Your cause is surely just, and the support shown in the ballot you have conducted, despite the unacceptable and undemocratic intimidation by management and the military, clearly demonstrates that your members are behind you.

With best wishes for your continuing struggle.

Yours sincerely

FRANCES O'GRADY

General Secretary
