Dear High Commissioner

Mario Masuku - President of the People's United Democratic Movement

The TUC General Council join me in expressing our deep concern over the detention of Mario Masuku, President of the People's United Democratic Movement on 16 November 2008.

Our information is that he was arrested in connection with the alleged violation of the provisions of the Suppression of Terrorism Act and that the police have found 'seditious material' in his possession. The detention of Mr Masuku follows a worrying trend in the worsening repression by the Swazi authorities against progressive forces in the country. This incident will no doubt further aggravate the difficulties of dialogue and adversely affect the image of your country already tarnished by the long-standing ban on political parties and repressive laws. As member of the United Nations and other international institutions, Swaziland has an obligation to allow its citizens to enjoy the freedom of expression and association.

We urge you to pass on our deep concern over the safety of Mr Masuku to your Government and use your influence with the authorities to ensure that he is released unconditionally and without delay and allowed to take part in national dialogue leading to the establishment of democracy.

Yours sincerely

Brendan Barber

General Secretary
