Mr Hassine Abassi
Secretary General
Union Générale Tunisienne du Travail
Dear Brother Abassi,
Salafist attacks on the UGTT
I was shocked to hear of the recent firebombing of your offices across Tunisia by the Salafist movement.
I have no doubt that the UGTT was targeted by these Islamic fundamentalists precisely because it is a key voice for democracy and workers' rights in your country, witnessed both during the Tunisian revolution and the current fragile transition.
Our thoughts are with you and all our Tunisia sisters and brothers subject to this appalling intimidation. We call on the Tunisian authorities to bring these perpetrators to justice, and put an end to the growing violence caused by the Salafist movement.
We stand with you and are ready to help in any way with can.
In solidarity
BRENDAN BARBER
General Secretary
