TUC protests against continuing violence in Tunisia

TUC General Secretary Brendan Barber has just written to the Tunisian Ambassador to the UK protesting against the continued attacks on demonstrators by security forces, and calling for dialogue with civil society on a peaceful transition to democracy.

25 January 2011

H.E. Mr Hatem Atallah
Embassy of Tunisia

Dear Ambassador

Continued violence in Tunisia

On behalf of the TUC, its 58 member trade unions and the 6.2 million workers they represent, I am again writing to express my deep concern at the situation in your country.

I have been informed by the TUC's trade union partners that police have been attacking demonstrators in front of the Prime Ministers' office. The killing and assault of demonstrators by the police and security forces over the last few weeks is completely unacceptable. I urge you to end this violence immediately, and bring all of those responsible to justice.

I also urge you to open a constructive dialogue with all parts of civil society, including the Union Générale Tunisienne du Travail (UGTT),in order to achieve a peaceful transition to democracy.

The British trade union movement expresses its solidarity with its Tunisian brothers and sisters in this difficult situation. Your government must fulfill its obligations under international law and respect trade union rights and fundamental liberties such as the right to freedom of expression.

I look forward to your reply.

Yours sincerely

BRENDAN BARBER

General Secretary
