TUC solidarity

10 December 2008

On Wednesday 10 December, the Greek trade union confederation GSEE has called a General Strike. TUC General Secretary Brendan Barber has sent a message of solidarity to Yannis Panagopoulos, GSEE President, about the very difficult times his country and the Greek trade union movement are going through.

Here is the GSEE's explanation of the reasons behind the call for the General Strike.

The Greek General Confederation of Labour, GSEE, has called a nationwide 24-hour strike for December 10, 2008, organizing a mass rally before the Parliament to protest the anti-labour government policies that once more dominate a deeply anti social budget with high taxes and prices, unemployment and social benefit cuts that will further aggravate the burden of the global financial crisis and lay-offs on the working people of Greece.

At the same time we most resolutely condemn the cold-blood murder of a 15 year old youth by policemen and express our deepest condolences and solidarity to the bereaved family. This most despicable and heinous crime that has triggered senseless violence in our country cannot but revive memories of the darkest antidemocratic periods in the history of our country.

In this critical context, the defense of democracy in conjunction with the defense of our rights and income is imperative. The GSEE calls on all Greek citizens, workers, youth, citizens, unemployed, pensioners and migrants to actively participate in the General Strike and attend the peaceful Protest Rally on Wednesday, 10 December, at 11.00 before the Parliament at the Syntagma Square.
