Aung San Suu Kyi, Burma's pro-democracy leader and Nobel Peace laureate, symbolises the struggle of Burma's people to be free. She has been detained for over 13 years by the Burmese regime for campaigning for human rights and democracy in Burma. In Burma more than 2,100 political prisoners, including many trade unionists and labour activists are in jail, forced labour is rampant, trade unions are banned and democracy is crushed. The UN has already ruled that her detention is illegal.

Aung San Suu KyiOn May 18th Aung San Suu Kyi was put on trial, charged with breaching the terms of her house arrest after an American man, John Yettaw, swam to her house and refused to leave. The dictatorship are using the visit as an opportunity to extend her detention, which was expected to expire this month largely to isolate her in the lead-up to next's sham elections. Her trial is ongoing and she could face a further five years in detention.

Visit 64forSuu.org and let the world know that you demand the:

  • release of all political prisoners, including Daw Suu and all trade unionists in Burma's jails
  • implemention of a democratic constitution allowing for free and fair elections
  • free and independent operation of trade unions in Burma.
  • abolition of forced labour
  • implementation of a global arms embargo

TUC General Secretary Brendan Barber provided these 64 words:

'Dear Aung San Syu Kyi, While their sham trial tries to silence you, British workers have already found the Burmese regime guilty: guilty of forcing its people into backbreaking labour; guilty of brutalising ethnic minorities, and of causing vast, squalid camps of refugees; guilty of jailing trade unionists, monks and students. We are with you and all who say enough! In solidarity.
