embargo: For immediate release
Commenting on the final report of Lord Browne's review of higher education funding published today (Tuesday), TUC General Secretary Brendan Barber said:
'Giving universities the green light to more than double tuition fees could set higher education back decades to an era when only the very rich could afford to send their children to university.
'There is some encouragement for part-time students as the review acknowledges the unfairness of them having to pay fees upfront.
'But drastically raising fees, while the Government cuts investment in higher education, will mean students facing astronomical tuition fees for no real benefit to universities.'
