embargo: immediate release
TUC General Secretary Brendan Barber said: 'The TUC welcomes the Government's proposals to develop a sustainable transport strategy for the UK, recognising the central importance of transport in delivering economic success and CO2 reductions.
'This is a massive challenge, as the report acknowledges, ranging from the inclusion of aviation emissions within the European carbon-trading scheme to the development of a low carbon vehicles strategy.
'The TUC will welcome the opportunity to take part in the Government's plans for national and regional consultations with key stakeholders between January and April next year. A key priority for the TUC will be to highlight the economic opportunities of the rapid shift to a low carbon transport sector.'
