Why postcode pay doesn't add up

Issue date

In his 2011 Autumn Statement George Osborne made the case for introducing 'market-facing' pay into the public sector. Breaking up fair, transparent national pay arrangements would result in local or regional pay. This would mean different rates for people with the same skill, same experience and doing exactly the same jobs, just because of where they live.

Since then the Pay Fair campaign has been highlighting the implications and consequences of such a policy. We believe it is unfair, bad for the economy, isn't backed up by the evidence, isn't what the private sector does, would be impractical and is unpopular.

The case against regional or local pay has been growing and political and public opposition to it has increased. Together, campaigners have:

  • Briefed and lobbied MPs
  • Had motions pass at councils around the UK
  • Organised protests and street stalls
  • Generated over hundreds of articles in the local, regional and national press
  • Demonstrated public opposition to such a policy
  • Won backing from right across the political spectrum

The Chancellor's 2012 Autumn Statement takes place on Wednesday 5th December. We need you to help press the Government to rule out postcode pay. To help, we have created a Postcode Pay infographic for you to share online and send to MPs summarising why regional or local pay doesn't add up.
