Ed Sweeney, TUC, Trade Justice Parade rally

The International Confederation of Free Trade Unions (ICFTU) held the first ever Global Unions' Day of Action on Friday 9 November 2001 on the theme of Making Globalisation Work for People.

The TUC supported the Day of Action through a variety of activities and encouraged trade unionists to get involved. Click here to read our guide for the Global Unions Day of Action which has background information and action suggestions.

On 3rd November the TUC supported a Trade Justice Parade with NGOs in Central London. It was a colourful event with a turn-out of about 5,000 people. The message to the government was make trade work for people, particularly the poorest.

Unions round the world, on the 9 November, said "No" to globalisation where trade undermines the values and living conditions of workers.

Instead we want globalisation underpinned by solidarity and justice that:

  • advances workers' rights and job security
  • supports quality universal education and healthcare
  • helps the poor, not just the rich
  • is open and democratic
  • benefits all people
  • delivers true global justice and equality
