Pay Bargaining in 2010
The Trade Union Congress (TUC) and Incomes Data Services (IDS) invite you to attend their third joint conference on pay bargaining, offering your union the chance to attend at a fraction of the normal cost of such events. The first two conferences, held in 2008 and 2009, were widely seen as successes and this event builds on them. The TUC believes that senior trade union officers and negotiators should have the best advance intelligence about the context for pay bargaining in 2010. This valuable conference will assist you to plan strategically for the pay round as a whole and to identify any issues that are likely to emerge in negotiations.

Gender, Globalisation and Poverty Reduction Course
In paid work or not, women make up an ever growing majority of the world’s poor. This union learn course explores the unequal impact of globalisation and the challenges it presents for international development, together with some of the campaigning tools and activities that can help you organise around the issues as a trade unionist and/or within your own workplace. Running over International Women’s Day (8-9 March 2010) this course is designed for union lay representatives and organisers, tutors and union officers. As an optional part of the course you will be invited to take part in the TUC’s International Women’s Day celebrations at Congress House on the evening of March 8th. What does the course cover? Is women’s unequal share of poverty accidental or a foreseeable result of economic and social processes which have a gender bias? This two day course will help you explore how women’s health, wealth and well-being worldwide are affected by globalisation. We will also look at the extent to which key international policies such as the UN Millennium Development Goals and the ILO’s Decent Work Agenda provide us with the tools for combating this trend. There will be space to reflect on your own sector and to consider organising projects around the issues appropriate to your union/workplace situation. UK and international speakers active in these areas will be in attendance. Knowledge At the end of this course you will: • recognise the ways in which globalisation impacts on women’s poverty • appreciate policy designed to deal with poverty and inequality • have information on collective activity, in developing countries and within the UK, that is designed to tackle discriminatory processes. Skills At the end of this course you will be able to: • work comfortably with the concepts of gender, globalisation and international development • use gender analysis • assess the opportunities for taking action in your union/workplace.

Going Green at Work

Chair: Paul Noon, General Secretary, Prospect/TUC general Council Keynote speakers include TUC Deputy General Secretary, Frances O Grady; Government minister/s from DECC and BIS (TBC); Sarah Pearce, TUC Greenworkplaces Project Leader; and Climate Solidarity Project. Plus expert-led workshops on: • Greening your workplace: sharing best practice - with Sarah Pearce, TUC, Frances Robertson, SWTUC, and green reps from GOSH, Bristol Council, BT, SWTUC and other greenworkplaces. • Adapting workplaces to climate change: from emergency services and public sector responses to tackling higher workplace temperatures – with Alice Hood, TUC, and Paul Hampton, FBU (tbc). • Get CRC Ready – for service sector organisations, the Carbon Reduction Commitment kicks in from 1 April 2010. Greenworkplaces have a key role to play in tackling climate change. Today, there are well over 1,300 union-led greenworkplace projects in the UK, compared with a handful four years ago. Workplaces burn energy, consume resources, generate waste and travel. Workplaces are responsible for 20% of UK emissions. DECC, the lead Government department, said that, “The changes we need to make to 2020 and beyond will transform our workplaces and our whole economy….The plan to 2020 will cut emissions from our workplaces by 13% on 2008 levels.” So come along and take part in the debates!
