embargo: For immediate release
Commenting on the Women and Work Commission report published today (Wednesday), TUC General Secretary Brendan Barber said:
'This is a stern wake up call to anyone who thinks the UK is anywhere near ending the gender pay gap.
'The report rightly recommends that efforts to tackle gender stereotyping should start at school. But it's equally important that we tackle the stereotyping and barriers women face at work as well.
'Women have outperformed men in education for a number of years, yet many still end up in low paid, part time work once they become mothers. Enabling parents to better balance their childcare responsibilities while continuing in jobs that develop and make full use of their skills would give the UK a huge productivity boost - exactly what is needed to get the economy moving again.'
