The TUC has today (Tuesday) said the government is right to push ahead with its plans for gay marriage.

TUC General Secretary Brendan Barber said: 'The government should be commended for looking to introduce gay marriage in the face of very strong and vocal opposition.

'Gay people must be given the same rights as everybody else and it essential that ministers continue to resist the calls of disgruntled Conservative backbenchers and religious opponents.'
