Colleagues from PCS have worked with the International Slavery Museum to put together a talk to discuss the topic of 'Arts, culture and racism' as part of a series of events during Black History Month. The event has been partly organised by Zita Holbourne, from the PCS NEC, and local activist and North West TUC Executive member, Clara Paillard. Details of the event are below.

Arts. Culture & Racism - Monday 27th October 2014

Institutional racism can occur in public government bodies, private business corporations or universities. In September a new exhibition, the Human Zoo, by white South African artist Brett Bailey was organised by the Barbican. The exhibition, which featured live black performers shackled and in cages, created a huge controversy in the art world. Black and anti-racist campaign groups objected to the exhibition and their campaign forced the Barbican to cancel the show, generating debates around institutional racism, the role of art and art censorship.

But what is institutional racism and how does it express itself in the arts and culture sector? In this event the International Slavery Museum teams up with PCS union, Black Activists Rising Against Cuts and MCARF (Merseyside Coalition Against Racism and Fascism) to debate the issue.

Join Dr Richard Benjamin, International Slavery Museum Director, Zita Holbourne, artist, PCS union Executive Committee and co-chair of BARAC (Black Activists Rising against Cuts) and Councillor Anna Rothery for the debate.

This event starts at 5:30pm. It is free to attend and there is no need to book.
