Welcome for Sainsbury science review

The TUC has welcomed the publication of 'Race to the top', Lord Sainsbury's review of the Government's science and innovation policies.

TUC General Secretary Brendan Barber said:

'Lord Sainsbury's review is welcome and full of insight and clear analysis. It is right to say that the UK will succeed by producing high value goods and services driven by innovation and helped through smart procurement and regional strategy.

'It is absolutely right to identify sectors such as aerospace, pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, nanotechnology and new sources of energy as crucial for future economic success. The TUC has long called for this.

'But if we were to have a criticism it would be that it does not completely follow through the logic of its analysis. There should be a clear call for the government to pick winning sectors. It is time to put an end to the old debate between picking winners and letting the market rip. The modern way is to use the full force of government to steer and support innovation in the strategically important sectors that can succeed in a globalised and competitive economy.'
