Full Employment that Works for Everyone. Seminar with Rachel Reeves Monday 23rd June 2014.

Issue date

On Monday 23rd June the TUC hosted a seminar considering Full Employment that Works for Everyone at parliament, to discuss and debate how government could make a real difference.

 Speakers included:
•        Rt Hon Rachel Reeves MP, Shadow Secretary of State for Work and Pensions
•        Frances O’Grady, General Secretary, TUC
•        Tony Wilson, co-author of Equitable Full Employment
•        Chair: Michael McCann MP

A new TUC pamphlet Equitable Full Employment was launched at the event. It shows that the first ten years of the last government saw employment in some of the most disadvantaged regions and local authorities and for some of the most disadvantaged groups catching up with the rest of the country. Employment has been growing strongly for two years but there are serious weaknesses in the current patterns of recovery: job starts remain below pre-recessionary levels, wages have fallen in real terms and productivity is low. At present, the best that can be hoped for is a recovery that leaves the challenges we faced before the recession still unmet.
