Employers and unions will come together to debate why redundancy isn't working at a panel discussion at TUC headquarters this Thursday (April 26).

The debate, sponsored by StaffShare and including TUC General Secretary Brendan Barber and ACAS Chief Executive John Taylor, will consider why UK businesses continue to rely upon dated redundancy policies, which not only inflict massive social costs on employees and the economy but also waste skills and training investment, and consider the alternatives.

The event takes places between 12.30pm and 3pm at Congress House in central London.

Other panellists include John Duncan, Group HR Director at the Royal Mail; David Lennan, Director of StaffShare; Sir Steve Bullock, Chair of the Workforce Board at the Local Government Association, and Sarah Anderson CBE, Chair of Call Britannia.

Areas for discussion will include:

  • Redundancy as a business strategy - is reactive skill-wastage still (or ever) socially acceptable?
  • The alternatives to redundancy - what are they and shouldn't they be encouraged?
  • Society and the workplace - the attitude to work and the workplace are changing but how do employers best react?
  • Y-Generation work - young people and changing attitudes to work and time.
