With China set to become the largest economy in the world by 2016 and with South Korea spending five times as much as most EU countries on research and development, the TUC is hosting a seminar next week to look at what the UK might learn from China and her near neighbours.

The starting point for Tuesday’s seminar is a new report from the TUC – The Way of the Dragon – which argues that with the right government policies, the rising Asian economies need not herald the end of the UK’s industrial strength, but could instead offer huge opportunities.

The event will be chaired by Linda Yeuh, the BBC’s Chief Business Correspondent and author of China’s Growth: the Making of an Economic Superpower. People attending the event at the TUC’s central London headquarters will also hear contributions from the worlds of business, academia and trade unions.

The seminar to launch The Way of the Dragon takes place at Congress House between 10.30am and 12noon on Tuesday 15 April.

Speakers at the event will be Martin Jacques, Senior Fellow Cambridge University and Visiting Professor at Tsinghua University, Beijing, and author of When China Rules the World: The End of the Western World and the Birth of a New Global Order, Terry Scuoler, CEO of the manufacturers’ organisation EEF, and Paul Nowak, the TUC’s Assistant General Secretary.
